Book report: I am the Messenger

The book "I am the Messenger" tells the story of Ed Kennedy, an underage Taxi driver, who's living in Australia. He's always playing card games with his best friends, Marv, Ritchie and Audrey. His Dad died a few months ago. With Audrey he's in love but she had a very hard childhood, so she doesn't want to love anyone.
The book starts at a bank robbery, Ed and his friends are in there and after a while the gunman wants to have a car for driving away. Marv gives him his keys and the gunman tries to bunk of from there, but Marv's car isn't the best so it doesn't start and Ed is running out of the bank.
He's running there for taking the pistol of the gunman and he gets it.
The next days he's in every newspaper, as a little hero.
After that Ed gets his first message, it's a card, the ace of diamonds. Three addresses and the times where he has to be there are written on it. He drives at Edgars street one day, when it's dark. What he sees is terrible, a man who gets home drunk and who rapes his wife.
His little daughter is crying, but he doesn't care.
Ed doesn't do anything, not yet.
The next address is the address of an old lady, she's called Milla.
When he gets there she's thinking that Ed is a man she knows and he's acting as he really would be. She calls him Jimmy so Ed is getting on the graveyard, for looking who is Jimmy.
He notices that Jimmy was her husband and she's almost 60 years without him, but now, he's there. Ed reads out of her favourite book and the old lady is happy to have back her love.

The last address of the Ace of Diamonds is from a girl, she runs all morning barefoot, but at races with shoes on, she always looses. Ed is noticing her problem and makes her a gift, she gets a empty shoe box and she's understanding his letter. At the next race she runs like never before, barefoot.

After all that Ed is getting a call, someone says he should look in his letterbox, so he does.
He finds a gun in there and he knows what to do with it so he drives to the bar, where the Edgars-street-guy is in. When he comes out Ed is asking if he needs a taxi for free.
The man gets in and also falls asleep very soon, so Ed drives to a mountain and wakes up the man. He talks at him and the man is scared and he says that he's feeling like his wife is feeling every night. Ed can't shoot him, but the man gets a shock for his life.

When Ed comes home he gets beaten by two Men, Keith and Daryl. When he wakes up they said that he had done the right things, and it's good that he hadn't killed the man.
Now he gets the second message, the ace of clubs cart.
There's written that the man from Edgars street is in another city and he'll never come back.
And also there's written that he should say a prayer for the stones of home.
First Ed doesn't know what to do now, but when he works a strange man gets in his taxi saying Ed where he should drive to and gets out of the taxi there. When Ed does too he sees that there are three names written on stones.
The first man where he goes to is a priest and Ed knows the problem soon.
His church isn't as visited like it should be. Ed gets the idea for selling food and free beer after worship, so the message is fullfilled.
The next message is a woman, who has three kids, she goes to work often and at one day in the week the children can eat an ice-cream. Ed buys her the mother an ice-cream and her daughter says that next time she'll have something of hers.
The last message there is a young boy, he gets beaten by his brother and hate him for that.
One day Ed is going there for beating the boy terribly. After that he goes to the telephone box for calling his older brother and says where the younger one lies. After rescuing his little brother they hold together.
At the Ace of Spades card are three authors written on.
Each of them has a book which is called similar to a street name in Ed's town. After reading a few pages Ed also gets the number of the houses.
The first message is a family, they are all very lovely and it's close to christmas so they want to show Ed their christmas lights, but most of them are broken-down.
He gets a new pair of it and lay it for their front door.
The next message is at a restaurant, Ed is eating there when his mom appears, she's eating with another man and Ed gets before her house, waiting for her.
She says that Ed is like his father so she can't cover him like her other kids.
It's hard, because his father was always drunk and nothing in life was as necessary as alcohol, but Ed liked him, he thinks that his old man was a gentleman.
The third address is at a cinema, where nearly no one is going to and the old man who is the keeper of it just wants to watch a movie like he did in the past, so Ed takes Audrey for watching a movie and they asked him for watching with them. They are watching as far as a man appears, he let a movie lay there where Ed is on so they are watching at it. At every message Ed gets filmed.
Shortly after Ed gets the Ace of hearts card, where are three names of films on.
He looks at details of the films and he observes three names which are Sanchez, which is the last name of Ritchie, Marvin and Audrey.
Ritchie thinks that he has no sense in life anymore and Ed often talks to him and help him finding a new job and getting whatever he wants for being lucky.
After Ritchie's message is done Ed starts to get to know a new Marv.
He's always saving money and Ed wants to know why so he asks and Marv tells him that he
has a little daughter. Marv was in love with a girl a few years ago, but than she gets pregnant and they moved to another town. Ed takes him there and Marv is a very lucky father, and he's absolutely thankful to Ed.
The last one is Audrey and Ed knows what to do, he knows that Audrey do love him but she doesn't wants to acknowledge it for herself so Ed is getting there late in the night.
They do nothing more than dance, dancing all the night.
When Ed thinks it's all over he gets the last card, the joker.
His own address is written on it. Ed doesn't really know what to do but than a man
sits in his apartment, giving him a piece of paper where's written that he should go to the grave of his father, so he does.
At the next morning when he's driving around the city with the taxi a man gets in.
It's the gunman from the bank robbery at the beginning of the story, he's out of jail, because 6 months are ago. He says Ed driving to every person he met because of the messages, for thinking about them. The man has a mirror in his hands and show it to Ed, he let repeat Ed what he said to him when he went into prison. He said that Ed is a dead man.
But he explains that it's because he's like his father was. Ed comprehend that the man went to jail for all those people and for him, too. He isn't a dead man any longer.
When Ed gets home he met a young man, the messenger. He says that he introduced all this, and ones, when he came to the city he observes Ed's family like Ed did it, too. But he did some more, he killed Ed's father. He gives Ed an envelope where he explained nearly everything and he goes, out of Ed's life, forever. When Audrey appears Ed is happier than ever before, because she wants him, she loves him and she's ready for a relationship. They both decide together for not opening the last envelope, because the life is now and it just belongs to them.

I have to say that reading the book was exciting but it was just very hard to understand particulary at the end. When you've started to read it's hard to stop, so sometimes i went to bed late in the night, because of reading. It wasn't my first choice but I'm glad of having read it and I'm not sure if the other one would be more like I like it.
