Author information, Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexie, born on 9th October 1966 in the Spokane Reservation in the State Washington (West Coast), was born with water on his brain (check the explanation "Water On The Brain") and survived the surgery. But his brain had already been damaged and he often had seizures. He was very intelligent, however, and learned reading when he was 3 years old. His first real novel he read at the age of 5. After some time in the little reservation school of the local small town Wellpinit he decided to get better education at Reardan High School. He was the only Indian there. In the Basketball Squad he became a star player with a nice jumpshot, transferring 1985 on scholarship to the Gonzaga University. Two years later he joined the Washington State University, also on scholarship. After leaving University he wrote his first poems and at least "The Business Of Fancydancing" was published. This success inspired him and he wrote many other books, lots were awarded like "The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian" which got the "National Book Award".
